Exciting news here at Modron! We will be presenting a panel on Saturday May 10th at the conference of the Association of Welsh Writing in English (AWWE) which takes place in Gregynog Hall in North Wales. You can attend in person or online.
Modron will present a panel titled “Environmental Underscapes” on May 10 at the AWWE conference. Featuring editors Kristian Evans, Zoë Brigley Thompson, and Taz Rahman, the panel discusses ecological themes in poetry, examining grief, trauma, and climate change within contemporary works.
The conference looks set to be brilliant with speakers like Kirsti Bohata, Tony Brown, Aidan Byrne, Mary-Ann Constantine, Nia Davies, Philip Gross, Robert Minhinnick, Tomos Owen, Linden Peach, Sally Robert-Jones, Durre Shahwar, M. Wynn Thomas, Emily Trahair, and Daniel Williams. There are so many incredible writers and scholars – too many to list!

Kristian Evans (Modron) – The Dunes, an ecological poetry film, written by Kristian Evans and filmed by Nathan Roach
Zoë Brigley Thompson (The Ohio State University / Modron / Poetry Wales) – ‘Welsh Women Poets from Modron Magazine: Creatures in an Underworld of Grief, Trauma and Loss’
Taz Rahman (Modron / Poetry Wales / Just Another Poet) – ‘Conscious and Unconscious Embeddings of the Natural World and Climate Change in Contemporary Poetry’

Hi, Kristian and Zoe,
It was good to hear you both and Taz together at Gregynog, though our paths there didn’t intersect by very much. Kris’ video resonated with me, partly because I’d only discovered Kenfig for the first time a few months ago. Such a sense of undiscovered lives, layer on layer of them, in what could be taken for an emptiness…
… which led to this thought. The project that took me to Kenfig was working with Glenn Davidson and Anne Hayes of Artstation on their artists’ residency for Natur am Byth https://celf.cymru/news-jobs-opportunities/natur-am-byth-arts-engagement-streaming-event. That work was looking at (and listening to) the endangered Shrill Carder Bee, at Kenfig and at Newport Wetlands. Predictably, the words I wrote went well beyond a voiceover for their audio-visual work; there’s a substantial set of six poems, all concerned with how and whether we can get inside another species’ sensorium… which I’d guess has been one of your concerns at Modron.
I don’t know where you are in developing the whole Modron project, but if you thought talking about that sequence would be interesting, I’d be up for it. With acknowledgement to Artstation, of course, and the Natur am Byth scheme, but no copyright complications. They just feel like poems that would like to be part of further conversations in the world.
